Non-Invasive Skin Cancer Treatment
Continuing its quest to offer the most advanced dermatologic treatments, Dermatology Alliance-Keller is the first practice in Fort Worth, and one of only a few in Texas, to offer a safe, non-surgical way to treat non-melanoma skin cancer. Known as the SRT-100™, manufactured by Sensus Healthcare, there are only 100 of the specially-designed machines available to dermatology offices across the country. Most importantly, the SRT-100 has a cure rate of 95 to 98 percent.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (Non-melanoma Skin Cancer or NMSC) are the most common types of skin cancer. The good news is that skin cancer is highly curable if detected and treated early. The most common treatment for NMSC is surgery. Dermatology Alliance-Keller in Fort Worth, Texas, now offers a safe, non-invasive way to treat non-melanoma skin cancer with its new FDA-approved superficial radiation therapy (SRT) machine.
Historically, dermatologists treated most skin cancers with radiation, but the radiation was too strong and poorly controlled. Side effects of radiation caused dermatologist to focus on surgical treatements for skin cancer, leading to advanced surgical techniques (Moh’s Surgery) to remove skin cancers. With the advances in electronics and medicine, researchers have developed the ability to precisely control lower amounts of X-ray. Low energy X-rays with limited penetration treats the skin so that the unwanted side effects of radiation on underlying tissue are minimized.
Technology advances in radiation skin cancer treatment, led to the development of a new device for superficial radiation (SRT) therapy known as the SRT-100™ manufactured by Sensus Healthcare. SRT-100 was designed intentionally to be used for the treatment of NMSC in physician’s office. Currently, there are only about 100 of the specially-designed machines available in offices across the country. Dermatology Alliance-Keller is the first dermatology practices in Fort Worth, and one of only a few in Texas, to offer this advanced non-surgical skin cancer treatment.
SRT-100 offers patients a safe skin cancer treatment alternative to surgery that, until now, has not been widely available. Physicians have known for many years that skin cancer is treatable with radiation, but the technology wasn't advanced enough to deliver adequate results. SRT-100 is a great alternative to surgery for patients that are at risk for surgical complications. SRT is not for everyone with NMSC, but it may be an alternative for patients that require a disfiguring surgery to remove a skin cancer from a cosmetically sensitive area. SRT requires 12 short visits, three times a week for four weeks to complete a course of treatment.
The SRT-100 can be safely used to treat non-melanoma skin cancer, including basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, on the face and other areas of the body. SRT is a low energy radiotherapy that goes no deeper than the thickness of the skin. SRT is widely recognized by insurance companies as an effective therapy and covered by most plans including Medicare. An important advantage of SRT over surgery is its low cost. SRT has several other advantages over surgical procedures:
- Virtually painless
- Short procedure time
- Safe for patients on blood thinners
- No anesthesia requirement
- Minimal to no scarring
- Virtually no post-surgical infections
- Low chance for recurrence
- Faster healing process
- No need for reconstruction after procedure
